Outstanding Natural Beauty
The Fowey (pronounced FOY to rhyme with JOY!) Estuary is a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty situated on the south coast of Cornwall. It is the deepest harbour between Falmouth to the west and Plymouth to the east. As such, Fowey is still a working port, exporting china clay that is mined in Cornwall to all parts of the world. It also has a thriving mussel farm just offshore and a busy boat building industry. Fowey also regularly welcomes large cruise liners, which incredibly can moor right inside the harbour opposite the town centre!
The whole area is surrounded by stunning scenery and coastline with lots of wonderful walks to explore. The estuary is also a water lovers paradise with sailing, fishing, kayaking and SUP boarding very popular. Boats are available to hire by the hour, day or week, so you can become a captain whenever you want! Or take a harbour cruise and listen to the local captains' tales of the town's chequered history.
The town of Fowey itself, has a great choice of small independent shops, pubs, cafes and restaurants. A summer's evening spent on the Town Quay, eating fresh local seafood and enjoying a pint or two of the local brew is a magical experience!
A short walk along the Esplanade brings you to Readymoney Cove, where there is a lovely beach that will keep the kids happy as they splash in the safe sheltered waters before enjoying a Cornish ice cream at the beach cafe.
Just a short drive away in the world famous Eden Project, one of Britain's most popular and critically acclaimed visitor attractions and the remainder of Cornwall is easily accessible from your perfect holiday-base.
This is Cornwall at it's best - but there again we are a bit biased!!
